What is Candombe?

Candombe is a drum-based musical style of Uruguay. This rhythm developed in the Rio de la Plata area — Buenos Aires and particularly in Montevideo — among the black slaves brought by the Spanish colony in the 18th Century. Candombe is based on Bantu African drumming and other influences the African community received from the new environment they lived in. In Uruguayan culture this drum-based musical style is highly significant and extremely popular, going strong on the streets, halls and carnivals all over the country.

Candombe is a polyrhythmic three-part-drums-ensemble formed by the three tambores called chico, repique and piano, and the music composed on the basis of this rhythm encompasses a range of styles like funk, jazz, rock and tango, among others.

SoCorpo, the vocal ensemble comprised of Sasha Bogdanowitsch & Sabrina Lastman, will present On Becoming at La Mama Moves Festival on Fridays June 11 & 18 at 10 pm.

On Becoming is an original music theatre work for two a cappella voices, recorded music, electronics, and live instruments. This work explores the dimensions & dynamics of the self, and its perpetual capacity of transformation.

SoCorpo creates interdisciplinary work that unites and explores the boundaries between music, sound, movement, theatre and visuals, and whose music stretches the possibilities of the human voice and bridges gaps between contemporary new music, jazz, folk and world music. In 2009 SoCorpo released the album On Becoming based on this performance. www.socorpo.com

After a great tour this week with Philip Hamilton’s VOICES in New England, Sabrina will be performing “Dialogues of Silence” at the New York City College of Technology on April 20 at 3 pm, and is open to the public.

Dialogues of Silence is an interdisciplinary performance of voice, sound and movement. This new music theatre piece is based on the poetry and inner world perception of Uruguayan poet Idea Vilariño (1920-2009). In this performance, Vilariño’s existentialist poetry meets music & sounds that create a world beyond the limits of the text’s power.Dialogues of Silence consists of a solo vocal artist who translates the poetic atmosphere into a dance and sound experience.

Tuesdays, 01/19 – 03/23; 6:30pm to 8pm
A.R.T./New York Spaces
520 Eighth Avenue, 3rd Floor
New York, NY 10008

Singing is a way of discovering oneself, a dialog with our inner self and an experience of communicating with others. The voice can take us to a deep journey of sounds, qualities, styles and expressions. For this journey to be healthy, energetic, and artistic, we need an approach to the voice as an instrument; we need to learn from it and about it.

This workshop focuses on the development of the voice through breathing, body awareness and voice technique (pitch quality, range, support -physical strength-, emission & intonation). During this process we’ll work on collective singing, individual song interpretation, sound exploration and voice improvisation. Through work on body releasing and voice technique, we bring our body/mind to a state of open and creative presence. Open to all levels.

This album is based on the original music theatre performance for two a cappella voices “On Becoming”, which combines and explores the boundaries between music, movement and theatre. This work explores the dimensions/dynamics of the self, and the perpetual capacity of transformation. Sasha Bogdanowitsch and Sabrina Lastman (SoCorpo) have a varied background in new music, world music and jazz. These influences figure prominently in this highly original piece with conception & composition by Sasha Bogdanowitsch on voice/swarsangam/percussion, and Sabrina Lastman on voice/percussion. Visit: http://www.socorpo.com/
