River of Painted Birds – Premiere 2010 at Vital Vox

November 21st, 2010

River of Painted Birds by Sabrina Lastman is a new work commissioned by NYSCA to be premiered at VITAL VOX. This music performance is created for solo voice (sung & spoken), and prerecorded voice & sound tracks (tape recorder/walkman, computer) combining composed sections and free improvisation. It looks for a musical balance among elements of jazz, experimental and contemporary music. This new piece is inspired by the poetry and texts of writers and thinkers –ex-political prisoners– that created their work as a consequence of the repression during and after the dictatorship period of the seventies in Uruguay. River of Painted Birds was created on Ubuntu (OS) using Linux, SooperLooper, Ardour, Jack, and Ladish programs.

What is Candombe?

Candombe is a drum-based musical style of Uruguay. This rhythm developed in the Rio de la Plata area — Buenos Aires and particularly in Montevideo — among the black slaves brought by the Spanish colony in the 18th Century. Candombe is based on Bantu African drumming and other influences the African community received from the new environment they lived in. In Uruguayan culture this drum-based musical style is highly significant and extremely popular, going strong on the streets, halls and carnivals all over the country.

Candombe is a polyrhythmic three-part-drums-ensemble formed by the three tambores called chico, repique and piano, and the music composed on the basis of this rhythm encompasses a range of styles like funk, jazz, rock and tango, among others.

Voice Workshop

December 21st, 2009

Tuesdays, 01/19 – 03/23; 6:30pm to 8pm
A.R.T./New York Spaces
520 Eighth Avenue, 3rd Floor
New York, NY 10008

Singing is a way of discovering oneself, a dialog with our inner self and an experience of communicating with others. The voice can take us to a deep journey of sounds, qualities, styles and expressions. For this journey to be healthy, energetic, and artistic, we need an approach to the voice as an instrument; we need to learn from it and about it.

This workshop focuses on the development of the voice through breathing, body awareness and voice technique (pitch quality, range, support -physical strength-, emission & intonation). During this process we’ll work on collective singing, individual song interpretation, sound exploration and voice improvisation. Through work on body releasing and voice technique, we bring our body/mind to a state of open and creative presence. Open to all levels.
